Through some of them, I see you are living in a warm climate because you mention you live in paradise, but I live in the northeast and the weather is fierce! Every fall as the weather changes I get dry, scaly skin, cracked lips, rosacea cheeks and more. It can be a real problem because I notice my skincare products are not strong enough to help. What do you recommend I do to help alleviate these problems? What skin care routine canI do every day that will radically transform my skin to look just as amazing in the fall as it has been in the Summer. Help!

Thank you so much for writing to me and for being a part of my Skin Tight Naturals family and newsletter recipient. Yes, Fall skin can be a big headache and a real downer for your skin’s social life! Having chapped, dry, burning skin is no joke in the winter in northern America and any country that experiences cold chilling weather as the season change.

Everyone knows that I use to have severe acne and other skin care problem and it’s taken years of learning what product ingredient works and which do not. My struggle also was a gift because it caused me to seek solutions not only for myself but for others. Here is my take on Fall skincare tips. But first, before we get into fall skin care tips that help transform your skin, let visit the problems that many people suffer from.

Fall Skincare Problems

Dry skin 

Dry skin is a common problem for most people, yet a few take the time to get solutions for it.  A drop in sebum production causes dry skin to develop sensitiveness resulting to a dried-out look and the inability to preserve moisture.  The skin generally feels stretched and uncomfortable following washing unless a skin cream or moisturizer is applied on the skin. Dry skin is worsened by extreme temperatures, wind, and air-conditioning, which cause skin chaps, flakes, and tight feeling.  Cracking and chapping are symptoms of extremely dehydrated, dry skin, and calls for the treatment and use of dry skin care products. 

When choosing dry skin care products, make sure that the product is of neutral pH, non-detergent product; also avoid the use of commercial soaps. Moisturizers which are air-excluding and gentle skin moisturizers are also good dry skin care products, which restore suppleness of dry skins. Dry skin care products such as milky or creamy cleansers are also great for dry skin, as they promote skin moisture.  The first thing you much do is make sure you are hydrated from the inside out. Drink plenty of water; at least 64 ounces daily. 

Sensitive skin

Sensitive skin is governed by a few basic rules. However, even before we delve into the rules for sensitive skin care, it’s important to understand what a sensitive skin is. Sensitive skin is one which is unable to tolerate any unfavorable conditions (environmental/other), and which easily gets irritated on contact with foreign materials (including skin care products).

For this reason, some products are specially labeled as sensitive skin care products. The degree of sensitivity can, however, vary from person to person (and depending on that, the sensitive skin care procedures vary too). 

Generally, all skin types respond negatively to detergents and other chemical based products. However, the damage starts generally beyond a defined threshold (or tolerance level). This tolerance level is very low for sensitive skin types, leading to skin getting damaged very easily and quickly.  Sensitive skin care products either avoid the potential irritants or keep them at very low concentrations. 

Here are a few tips for sensitive skin care:

* Use sensitive skin care products only (i.e. the products that are marked for sensitive skin care only). Also, check the instructions/ notes on the product to see if there are specific restrictions/warnings associated with the product).

* Even within the range of sensitive skin care products, choose the one that has minimum preservatives, coloring, and other additives

* Do not use toners. Most of them are alcohol based and are not recommended for sensitive skin.

* Wear protective gloves when doing laundry or another chemical-based cleaning. If you are allergic to rubber, you can wear cotton gloves below the rubber ones.

* Another important tip for sensitive skin care is to avoid excessive exposure to the sun. Apply sunscreen lotion before getting out in the sun.

* Avoiding exposure to dust and other pollutants is also important for sensitive skin care. So, cover yourself adequately before going out.

* Use hypoallergenic, noncomedogenic moisturizer as a sensitive skin care product (if there is none specifically labeled as a sensitive skin care product)

* Use soap-free and alcohol-free cleansers. Cleanse your face whenever you return from spending time outdoors. 

* Do not scrub or exfoliate too hard. It can cause redness and even inflammation.

* Do not leave the makeup on for too long. Use hypoallergenic makeup- removers.

So, sensitive skin care is very different from the normal skin care. Sensitive skin care is more about being careful with your skin (both in terms of sensitive skin care products and protection against environments atrocities on the skin). When treating sensitive skin, it’s best to learn what really works to combat fine lines, wrinkles, crepey skin and more. 

Rosacea Skin 

Rosacea is a skin disorder that affects both women and men, often beginning when they enter the age of 30s, 40s, or 50s.  It is especially prevalent when the weather starts changing from warm to cold. It starts as a transient or flushing redness on the nose, cheeks, and in a number of cases the forehead and chin.  

The earliest stage of rosacea may have some burning or stinging sensations, including a dry or tight skin feeling. When the condition advances, the flushing turns more noticeable and persistent.  The skin may have papules, which are small, solid, red bumps, and pustules which are pus-filled spots. 

Rosacea should not be taken lightly when the first signs show up, as it can turn into more complicated cases that affect more parts of the face such as swollen face skin, the formation of cysts, and small, knotted bumps on the nose that make it appear swollen and red.  This skin condition is provoked by a lot of factors including spicy foods, sunlight, hot liquids, mental and physical stress, allergy and sinus conditions, alcohol, and extreme temperatures. Appropriate Rosacea skin care regimen should be practiced daily, and here are some of them:

Skin cleansing with non-irritating, oil-free, soap-free, and fragrance-free mild skin cleanser is the first step towards Rosacea skin care and should be performed daily.  Remember that removing dirt without upsetting the layers that protect the skin or the natural pH balance is very important.  Use a small amount as possible of cleanser, gently applying with the fingers, rinsing with a lot of lukewarm water, blotting with a soft towel is the right way to do it.

Medical treatment has no substitute in the effective Rosacea skin care.  If diagnosed, cautiously follow the prescribed treatment, applying the prescription in thin layer athwart affected areas, allowing it to dry before putting moisturizer, sunscreen, or make-up.  Using a sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher is advisable, especially for every exposed area while outdoors.

Moisturizing with enduring water-based cream or lotion formulated moisturizer is another important part of Rosacea skin care.  Since this condition is distinguished with dryness, affects the normal protective wall of the facial skin, thus the need to select a product that's mild and do not contain lanolin or fragrances.

Maintain the skins healthy, the normal state through face cleansing plus moisturizing twice a day, in the morning and before bedtime.

The proper Rosacea skin care helps reduce the further aggravation of Rosacea; it is always best to consult a dermatologist for diagnosis and suitable treatment of Rosacea.  Remember, treatment delayed is treatment denied.

The Fall Skincare Solution – Back To The Basics

Think Natural skin care

Put simply, natural skin care is caring for your skin in a natural and chemical-free way. Natural skin care advocates enabling the skin to take care of itself (without any assistance from synthetic materials/ chemicals).

Natural skin care is about inculcation of good habits in the way you lead your day to day life. A lot of natural skin care measures are actually the same as those for body care in general. 

So let’s see what these natural skin care measures are:

Water: Well, the first and the foremost natural skin care measure is  Drink a lot of water.  Around 8 glasses of water is a must every day. Water helps in flushing out the toxins from the body, in a natural way. It helps in the overall upkeep of the body and promotes good health for all organs (not just skin). 

Daily Cleansing: General cleanliness is another inexpensive way of natural skin care.  Daily shower, wearing clean clothes and sleeping on a clean mattress/pillow are all part of general cleanliness. After all, clean skin is the key to keeping the skin disorders at bay. 

Exercise: Regular exercise is the next thing on the cards. Exercise increases the flow of blood that helps in getting rid of body toxins and keeping you healthy.  Exercise also helps in beating stress which is the worst enemy of good health. 

Healthy Food – Healthy food and eating habits are also recommended for natural skin care.  Some type of food (e.g. oily food) is known to cause acne and should be avoided as much as possible. Your diet should be a healthy mix of various nutrient providing foods. Raw fruits and vegetables are known to provide freshness to your body and help in getting rid of body toxins.

Sleep: A good sleep is also instrumental in maintaining good health and in beating stress. As a natural skin care measure, a good sleep delays slacking of skin. 

Stress: Beating stress is another natural skin care therapy. Stress causes overall damage to body and health. Drinking a lot of water, getting a sound sleep and exercise has already been mentioned as stress busters. Indulging in a warm bubble bath, listening to music and playing your favorite sport are also good ways of beating stress. Yoga is yet another way of beating stress; it is fast gaining popularity among the masses.

Protection In The Sun: Avoiding excessive exposure to the sun (by wearing long-sleeved clothes, hat and umbrella etc), is another natural skin care strategy. Sunscreen lotions are also recommended as necessary. 

A lot of traditional and homemade natural skin care products/ measures are also known to be very effective. Such measures are not only natural and easy-to-follow but also relatively inexpensive. Besides that, a lot of natural skin care products are available in the commercial market. These include things like lavender oil, aloe vera etc., which don’t have any side effects.

The Fall Skincare 5 Step DIY Routine For Great Fall Skin

Step 1 – Give Your Skin A Nourishing Wash – there is a difference between washing your skin clean and nourishing your skin clean. Washing your skin leaves your skin stripped of your own natural essential oils that come from balanced hormones, skin enriched with collagen, and the excretions of healthy fatty acids. When you nourish your skin clean, you are not only cleansing but depositing nutrients INTO your skin that help to heal, repair, restructure, rejuvenate, all while leaving your skin fresh and free of bacteria and other harmful, toxic substances. It good to give your skin a nourishing wash 2 times a day, up to 3 if you workout.

Step 2 – Give Your Skin A Repair Job – Use a skincare product that addresses your main concern. For example, if you have dark spots or fine lines, use a product that addresses this issue. The reason why you want to use a repairing product is that you want it to be absorbed into your skin before you moisturize.

Step 3 – Give Your Skin A Moisture Bath – Moisturizing is very important part of any skincare routine. However, the positive thing about moisturizing is that it will lock in the nutrients in any repair formulas you use. Never use repair formulas AFTER you moisturize your skin. You want the repairing formula to get to work. The moisturizer seals and protects to make sure the skincare problem has a chance to reverse. Moisturizing helps keep our skin hydrated while locking in your repair products.

Step 4 – Give Your Skin A 24/7 Skin Tightening Treatment –No matter your age or skin condition, you need to use skin lightening products. Why? For prevention and for retardation of the aging process. We all are aging, but you can age slower if you do it right. Depending on your stage of aging, you need to find a skin lightening agent that will address your needs.
